AI in autonomous vehicle: Helper or killer?
For the past few weeks I’ve been looking into the usage of AI in autonomous vehicles and I’ve share my research results with all of you.
Why is AI being used in autonomous vehicles?
AI in self-driving cars is used for sensing, decision-making, predictive modelling, and natural language processing. This enables them to detect objects, predict behaviour, plan routes, and communicate with passengers, ensuring a safe driving experience.
Why is it becoming an issue?
Although the use of AI is making autonomous vehicles more intelligent and commercializing it easier, the wide use of AI is also making people more reliant on AI instead of themselves focusing on the road, but at current stage, AI can’t ensure 100% safety while operating on its own, causing uncontrollable accidents.
Who’s affected.
Technology giants building autonomous vehicles/providing AI software
New vehicle consumers
Traditional industries e.g. Taxi
Why they’re affected
Needs of commercialization of autonomous vehicle to make profits
Choosing between traditional vehicle or smart autonomous vehicle
The risk of unemployment due to autonomous vehicle taking over
Main risks of AI operated vehicles
In February 2023 this Waymo car stopped in a San Francisco street, backing up traffic behind it. The reason? The back door hadn’t been completely closed. Terry Chea/AP
1. Human errors in operation get replaced by human errors in coding.
2. AI failure modes are hard to predict
3. Probabilistic estimates do not approximate judgment under uncertainty
4. Maintaining AI is just as important as creating AI (Lack of maintenance and updates)
5. AI has system-level implications that can’t be ignored

Critical evaluation of source
Method: CRAAP Test
I used the CRAAP Test as I believe it’s the best method for examining my source.

Conclusion
Though AI technology is advancing rapidly, becoming safer and more intelligent, we must be aware of its flaws and keep our safety as our own duty, instead of handing it all over to AI.
