Using Critical Digital Literacy Skills to Evaluate Online Information Related to Deepfakes.

This week I’ve been putting my critical digital literacy skills to use by searching for information

about an internet safety issue about Identifying issues with the use of Artificial Intelligence to create deepfakes.

                                                       What is Deepfakes?

Deepfakes is a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.

I've been looking at Identifying issues with the use of AI to create deepfakes which is basically about AI have made possible to create deep fakes which are very realistic and possibly misleading audio, video, and image content that imitate real individuals.

                                                         Why is an issue?

Although these developments demonstrate the capabilities of AI, but it is also bringing some of the important ethical, legal, and societal issues as well.

As I just mentioned at the beginning that the Deepfakes are fake videos that make people look like they said or did things they didn't. They're made with advanced AI and can cause problems by spreading lies, hurting reputations, and making it hard to trust any video. For example, in this article that shows us about England and Wales will make it a criminal offense to create deepfakes of sexually explicit images under new legislation. We can exactly know deepfakes issues cause a lot of serious problem, just like use of the technology to add the faces of celebrities, public figures or someone that they knew-most often women into pornographic films.                                                Who is affected by Deepfakes?

Public figures and celebrities are frequently singled out to propagate false information. Actually Deep fakes also affected various people, I know that “Scams related to online investment trading platforms promoted mainly on social media resulted in Australians losing over $8 million” according to the 9 NEWS Australia published by Mar 4,2024 (source)

                                                      How Deepfakes occur?

Deep Fakes are created by Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning models. But now these deep fakes are always share across online platforms and apps, frequently for spreading misinformation, perpetuating fraud, and engaging in harassment.

                                                         Critical Evaluation

For this part I will introduce the article that use to my Critical Evaluation video. And this article is chosen in Brooking, which is written by John Villasenor February 14,2019, and is about Artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and the uncertain future of truth. Here is the link of the article:(source)

Then this is my video  about my critical evaluation of this article, and I use the T.R.A.A.P Test method:

Why did I choose TRAAP method because of it is a simple way to evaluate information and sources to see if they are trustworthy and useful.(source)

Using the TRAAP method helps you choose better sources for your research or learning

Timeless: to see when the article was published.

Relevance: to check if it associated with my research topic.

Authority: to identify the source and details of the article.

Accuracy: to  considered the information or example accurate or not in the article

Purpose: to give opinion or show the intent.
