Using Critical Digital Literacy Skills to Evaluate Online Information Related to the Internet Safety Topic of Deep Fakes

My dear bloggies,

This week I have been searching for information related to the issue of deepfakes on the internet using my critical digital literacy skills.

I’ve been looking at deep fakes, which are basically media that have been digitally manipulated to create realistic but fake or untrue content.

Basically, deepfakes are created by AI (artificial intelligence). They edit a real person’s digital files (such as photos, videos, and sounds) to create realistic actions or words that this person did not actually do or say. (source)

In 2023, roughly 500,000 video and voice deepfakes were shared on social media around the world (source).

Unfortunately, manipulating files is not something new. However, today’s technology makes it very difficult to distinguish between the fake and the real. Creating fake news, false pornographic videos, and hoaxes can result in manipulating public opinion during political elections or encouraging cyber harassment by damaging the reputations of celebrities. Identity theft, bullying, sexual exploitation, and extortion can also happen when deep fakes are maliciously used.

In 2023, roughly 500,000 video and voice deepfakes were shared on social media around the world (source).

96% of deepfakes are explicit (adult content of sexual or pornographic nature)(source). Women are the primary victims of that type of video, as opposed to men, who are more targeted in content about politics and corporations (source). Famous people such as celebrities (actresses, actors, musicians, and media professionals such as journalists) and politicians are mostly targeted by deep fakes; however, it can happen to anyone with a digital print.

Some deep-fake apps are available for anyone to use. In 30 seconds, the app can create a deep fake; however, those are usually easy to detect. More advanced algorithms, created by skilled people, which require time, knowledge, and effort, can create very realistic content. Those require a huge amount of sample or media to have the most realistic result possible (source).

Using the critical digital literacies evaluation method, the CRAAP method, I have chosen this article to evaluate: Deepfake Technology: Unveiling the Ethics and Dangers | by Dishu Bansal | Python in Plain English (medium.com)

The video below shows me evaluating my article with the CRAAP method.

I choose the CRAAP method to evaluate this source because it is the most applicable to web related articles, as the TRAAP, PROMPT, and CAN focuses on scientific or is too simplistic.

The image below describes the CRAAP method.

Thank you my bloggies for your support, I will see you next week !
