Using Critical Digital Literacy Skills to Evaluate Online Information Related to Deepfakes

This week I’ve been putting my critical digital literacy skills to use by searching for information about an internet safety issue: AI generating pornography- Deepfakes

What is Deepfakes?

Deepfakes are pictures or videos of a person in which their face or body was transformed to another person and appear to be a different person or the face or body was pasted on an image of a person made by AI.
I've been looking at AI generating pornography, which is basically AI software generating fake pornography and they are not real events, but they are made based on image of real people and shared non-consensually.

Why is it an issue?

AI generated pornography is an issue because it is always used to spread false information, perform fraud and scams and put harassment on people.
Cybercrime experts had said that children and teenagers are increasingly being targeted by predators generating deepfake images. Since people will spread these deepfakes, this might lead to cyber bullying.
Besides, this can also affect one's reputation because once a deepfake goes viral, it can be challenging to correct the false information.

How does it occur?

People tended to create pornography using AI because of financial fraud, putting revenge on someone or just making celebrity pornographic videos to get familiarity in the public consciousness.

Who is affected by this issue?

Celebrities and sometimes innocent teenagers are the most common targets. For example, Taylor Swift's deepfake explicit images was deluged on the site X, and the site was forced to temporarily ban searches for content of the singer.

Evaluation of my chosen article

The article that I chose was: OpenAI considers allowing users to create AI-generated pornography by Dan Milo who's a global technology editor published on 9 May 2024 (the guardian.com)

The video below shows me evaluating my article with the TRAAP method!!!

Method of Evaluation, WHY?
(Traap method)

I chose the TRAAP method because it is very convenient and very easy way to evaluate information and articles to see if they are reliable and accurate or not.
