Hello my besties,
This week I have been putting my critical digital literacy skills to use by searching for information about an internet safety issue of identifying and investigating AI Audio Deepfakes.
What is audio deep fake?
An audio deepfake is a form of artificial intelligence that generates convincing spoken sentences that seem like specific persons saying things they did not say. This technology was initially developed for a variety of applications aimed at improving human lives.
How do audio deepfakes work?
The technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze audio data, discerning patterns and characteristics of a target voice, and recreate a clone of that voice that can be used to say anything the programmers like.
Who is affected?
AI-generated audio deepfakes affect a broad range of individuals and sectors including:
- Public Figures and Politicians: These individuals are particularly vulnerable to deepfakes being used to spread false information or manipulate public perception. Deepfake audio can be used to fabricate statements or actions that never occurred, potentially damaging reputations and their careers.
- General Public: This will affect public trust in media because people nowadays may find it difficult to distinguish between real and fake audio, leading to confusion and potential manipulation of public opinion.
- Tech Companies and Developers: Those working on AI and digital media technologies are affected as they must continuously improve and develop tools to detect and counteract deepfakes.
