Digital Natives vs Digital Immigrants

My dear bloggies,

I told you that I would come back with something a bit more interesting!

WHAT AM I, AND WHY?

DIGITAL NATIVES
DIGITAL IMMIGRANT

Person who grew up with Internet and digital technologies.
Comfortable with the digital world and fluent in technology.
  • Like constant connectivity.
  • Bring their own technologies everywhere.
  • Prefer immediacy and have short attention periods.
  • Use texting and instant message short-hand such as: “c u”, “how r u”, “becoz”.
  • Going to the internet first for information.
  • Prefer to socialise online and weak in face-to-face communication.
Person who was born before Internet and digital technologies.
Start to use technology in their adult life.
  • Prefer to talk on the phone or in person.
  • Value ‘proper’ English when texting.
  • Prefer formal communication channels, such as phone, detailed emails, or face-to-face communication.
  • Do not understand the slang words or phrases on the internet, such as “idk”, “brb”, “t2yl”.
  • Printing things out as opposed to working on screen.

CONEXT is the key - Being a digital immigrant means that you have to learn to adapt to become comfortable with the digital world. With practice and will, you might even be more skilled than some digital native. However, if you don't practice theses skills, you are going to forget and be back to square one.

These terms can be offensive for some people, and I believe that not all the digital immigrants are 'clueless' with technology and not all the digital natives are 'expert' in the digital world. Yes, digital natives have a logical thinking that digital immigrants don't have but digital immigrants learn and work harder to get the skills that they have.

FOR ME, I am a digital native - duh. But I always try to improve my skills and learn new things because this new digital world is progressing very fast, and we need to keep up with the new advancement.

I will see you in my next post, coming up very soon ;)

Tilly <3.
